An old cliche, necessity is the mother of invention, reflects the primary idea behind the Acadiana365 calendar. While coordinating our own events, we found ourselves scrambling between multiple websites and personal contacts to determine the best possible date. Wouldn't it be nice, we thought, if there was a single place where this information is kept so that we and other event coordinators could quickly choose a date that doesn't conflict with other events.
Also, we wanted to open it up to the public, so that anyone could find events to attend that fit their own interests. If they happened to notice an event missing from the calendar, we would provide a means of submitting it.
After researching and reviewing many community calendars across the nation, we discovered that all of them went unused because they depended solely upon people manually entering information into them. Realizing that because event coordinators are busy and just don't have time to enter their event in multiple systems, the first phase of our calendar project was to identify and automatically keep up to date as many local events as possible. This automation is the foundation of the calendar.
